In short: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was a 2012 superhero sequel that traded the polish of its predecessor for a gritty, experimental aesthetic. Filmed across Romania and Turkey, the production featured Nicolas Cage channeling ancient artifacts to portray a darker, more volatile version of the iconic flaming-skulled antihero.

Released in February 2012, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance arrived with a production budget of $57 million, significantly lower than the $110 million spent on the 2007 original. Directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the film sought to distance itself from traditional superhero tropes by leaning into a chaotic, cartoonish energy. Nicolas Cage, reprising his role as Johnny Blaze, took an unconventional approach to his performance, painting his face in black and white and sewing fragments of Ancient Egyptian artifacts onto his leather jacket to embody the spirit of vengeance.

The production utilized diverse international locations to ground its supernatural narrative. Principal photography took place in Romania, including sites like Hunedoara Castle and the Transfăgărăşan, before moving to Turkey. In Cappadocia, the crew filmed amidst the region's distinctive rocky landscape, while the ancient Greek city of Hierapolis in Pamukkale provided a backdrop for scenes involving a Greco-Roman theatre. This aesthetic shift was intended to mirror the tone of the miniseries Ghost Rider: Road to Damnation, moving away from the polished look of the first film.

Despite these efforts, the film faced harsh criticism for its script and uneven CGI, earning an 18% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics like Peter Travers labeled it a dreadful mess, while others, such as Scott Collura, argued it was a polarizing experience that viewers would either love or hate for its sheer insanity. The film grossed between $132.6 million and $149.4 million worldwide. Following its release, Nicolas Cage declared he was finished with the franchise, and the character's film rights eventually reverted to Marvel Studios in 2013, paving the way for future iterations within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
