In short: Born from the ashes of World War I, the Grand National Assembly was not just a parliament; it was a defiant political instrument. Established in 1920 to resist foreign occupation, this body fundamentally reshaped a nation by abolishing the sultanate and declaring that sovereignty belonged to the people, not monarchs.

The Grand National Assembly (GNA) emerged in Ankara on April 23, 1920, as a direct response to the Allied occupation of Istanbul and the dissolution of the Ottoman parliament. Led by Mustafa Kemal, the assembly served as the political engine for the Turkish War of Independence. It rejected the Treaty of Sèvres, which had partitioned Ottoman lands, and instead asserted that the sultan’s government was under foreign control, making it a duty for citizens to resist.

Internal friction defined the early years of the GNA. Within its walls, modernists advocating for a republican regime clashed with conservatives who remained loyal to the monarchy. Mustafa Kemal navigated these tensions by forming his own defense-of-rights group, eventually steering the assembly toward the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923. The assembly’s power was solidified when it formally abolished the sultanate on November 1, 1922, forcing the last sultan, Mehmed VI, into exile.

Today, the GNA functions as the sole legislative house of the Turkish republic, consisting of 600 members elected through a system of proportional representation. While its origins were rooted in the urgent necessity of wartime resistance, it has evolved into a complex parliamentary system. It remains the central authority of the state, maintaining the legacy of the 1921 Fundamental Law, which established that sovereignty resides with the people—a radical departure from the imperial traditions that preceded it.
