In short: While most military units focus on territorial defense, one Italian corps specializes in a different kind of battlefield: the financial one. From tracking counterfeit billions to patrolling the seas, the Guardia di Finanza operates with military discipline to protect the very lifeblood of the Republic.

The Guardia di Financza is a militarized law enforcement agency operating under the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance. Unlike the Carabinieri, which falls under the Ministry of Defence, the GdF focuses on the intersection of public security and economic integrity. Its primary mission is to safeguard the legal economy and ensure that the Republic, the European Union, and local governments can rely on stable tax revenues and the proper use of community resources. Beyond economic oversight, the agency contributes to public order and international anti-drug operations. It also handles the political-military defense of national borders.

The agency's origins date back to 5 October 1774, when King Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia established the 'Light Troops Legion' for border surveillance and military defense. Over the centuries, the force has evolved through several iterations, including the 1862 Customs Guards Corps and the 1881 Corps of the Royal Finance Guard. By 1907, the corps was officially marked by its military status with the issuance of 5-point star uniforms. The corps has earned 18 awards for its war flag and 13 civil valour awards for disaster relief. It even integrated Army-style military discipline by 1908.

Today, the GdF maintains a vast, specialized structure. Its responsibilities range from investigating financial evasion and drug trafficking to maritime surveillance and even protecting archaeological heritage. The force is organized into various specialized commands, including the Central Aeronaval Command and the Special Forces Command, which oversees units like the Counter-terrorism Rapid Response Groups. This dual identity as both a police force and a military entity allows it to manage complex threats, from cybercrime to large-scale smuggling operations. Specialized branches include the GAT for cybercrime and the GICO for organized crime. Its reach extends to the 20 Italian regions and every province.
