In short: Guo Ziyi was a towering military genius who single-handedly preserved the Tang Empire during its darkest hour. From outsmarting rebel armies to walking unarmed into enemy camps to secure peace, his legendary life eventually saw him deified in Chinese folklore as the celestial God of Wealth and Happiness.

Born in 697, Guo Ziyi rose through the ranks via military examinations, eventually becoming a jiedushi, or regional military governor. His reputation was forged during the An Lushan Rebellion, which began in 755. Facing overwhelming odds, Guo utilized brilliant tactical maneuvers, such as luring rebels onto barren plains to starve their momentum, to secure decisive victories for the Tang. By 757, he had retaken the capital of Chang'an, prompting Emperor Suzong to famously declare that the country had been recreated by Guo's own hand.

Guo's influence extended far beyond the battlefield. In 765, he faced a combined force of Tibetans and Uyghurs who had been deceived into believing he was dead. In a display of immense personal courage, Guo rode into the Uyghur camp alone and unarmed. By revealing his identity and challenging their false intelligence, he successfully broke the enemy alliance, turning the Uyghurs into allies and effectively neutralizing the Tibetan threat for good. His strategic brilliance was often characterized by Sun Tzu’s ideal of achieving victory without loss.

Despite his immense power and popularity, Guo remained a figure of complex loyalty. He famously disciplined his own son for suggesting that Guo could easily seize the throne, a story later immortalized in Beijing Opera. His life was marked by such profound service that he was posthumously honored as Prince Zhongwu and elevated to the status of a deity. His legacy even rippled through history, as his descendants, including the famed Mongol general Guo Kan, continued to shape the military landscape of Asia for centuries to come.
