In short: Wu Zixu was a legendary Chinese general whose life was defined by a quest for vengeance. After his family was executed by the King of Chu, he fled into exile, famously aging overnight from stress. He eventually returned to dismantle his homeland, only to face a tragic, lonely end.

Born into the state of Chu, Wu Zixu’s life shifted in 522 BC when his father and brother were executed due to the machinations of a corrupt official. Fleeing toward the state of Wu, he survived a desperate border crossing at Zhaoguan. According to folklore, the intense psychological pressure of being a wanted man caused his hair to turn white and his face to age prematurely, a transformation that ironically allowed him to slip past guards unnoticed.

In the state of Wu, he became a pivotal military strategist, serving alongside figures like Sun Tzu. In 506 BCE, he helped lead the Wu army to a decisive victory at the Battle of Boju, capturing the Chu capital. Driven by his long-held grudge, he famously exhumed the corpse of King Ping of Chu and struck it 300 times. His influence later waned under King Fuchai, who ignored his warnings about the rising threat of the state of Yue. Forced to commit suicide in 484 BC, Wu Zixu requested his eyes be displayed on the city gate so he could witness the inevitable fall of the kingdom he had helped build.

History remembers him as a complex figure, serving as a model of loyalty and a cautionary tale for ministers. Sima Qian used his story in the Records of the Grand Historian as a foil for his own survival, contrasting Wu’s choice of honorable suicide with his own decision to accept castration to complete his work. Beyond the battlefield, he is venerated as a water deity, with some traditions linking his death to the origins of the Dragon Boat Festival, though this remains a subject of historical debate.
