The three-hour session that created a global pop anthem
In short: In 2008, Ryan Tedder was recovering from Achilles tendon surgery when a sudden burst of inspiration led to the creation of 'Halo.' Written in just three hours, this power ballad became a defining moment for Beyoncé, stripping away celebrity trappings to reveal a vulnerable, soulful side.
The origins of 'Halo' are rooted in a moment of creative spontaneity. While recovering from surgery, Ryan Tedder and Evan Bogart sought to craft a song inspired by the style of Ray LaMontagne's 2004 track 'Shelter.' After hearing Tedder play what he described as 'angelic' chords, Bogart suggested the title 'Halo.' The duo completed the composition in only three hours. Though media speculation suggested the song was intended for Leona Lewis, songwriter Ryan Tedder clarified that it was written specifically for Beyoncé. He had tentatively offered the track to Lewis's camp to gauge interest, but the song was ultimately reserved for Beyoncé, who recorded it for her 2008 album, I Am... Sasha Fierce. The track was designed to provide a glimpse of the artist's life 'underneath all the makeup' and celebrity drama.
Despite its massive success, the song was not without controversy. Kelly Clarkson later alleged that Tedder reused the musical arrangement—characterized by melancholy piano, loud drums, and handclaps—for her 2009 song 'Already Gone.' While Clarkson expressed frustration that the similarity might lead to accusations of theft, Tedder maintained that the melodies and lyrics were entirely distinct. 'Halo' has since become a global phenomenon. The track hit number one in Slovakia, Norway, Portugal, and Brazil, while also securing top-five positions in several other nations, such as the United Kingdom and the United States. In Brazil, it remarkably became the most-played song of the 2000s decade on the radio, despite its 2009 release.
The song's production involved complex vocal work, with Beyoncé receiving a writing credit after editing the song's bridge. The track's instrumentation includes piano, keyboard, drums, and strings, set to a tempo of 84 beats per minute in the key of A major.
