From Glasgow streets to global stages with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney
In short: How did a young guitarist from Glasgow's Muirend section become a cornerstone of funk and pop history? From his early days with the Dream Police to his pivotal role in the Average White Band, Hamish Stuart’s versatile musicianship has shaped the sound of legends.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 8 October 1949, Hamish Stuart began his professional journey in 1964. After forming the Dream Police, he recorded three singles for Decca Records before a pivotal move in the summer of 1972. That year, he joined the Average White Band, replacing guitarist Michael Rosen and remaining with the group until their breakup in 1982. He initially played lead guitar for his first professional group. His early recordings were released through Decca Records.
Stuart's career is defined by an extraordinary ability to switch between guitar and bass, a skill that served him well when he joined Paul McCartney's band. He contributed to McCartney's 1989 comeback album, Flowers in the Dirt, and participated in world tours in both 1989 and 1993. His session work and songwriting have reached the highest tiers of industry success, including collaborations with Aretha Franklin, George Benson, and Chaka Khan. His versatility allowed him to provide both guitar and bass parts for McCartney. He also performed on several subsequent albums for the legendary singer.
Beyond his work as a performer, Stuart has proven to be a prolific songwriter and producer. In 1986, he co-wrote the Atlantic Starr hit "If Your Heart Isn't in It." Later, in 1999, he released his first solo album, Sooner or Later, via his own label, Sulphuric Records. His lasting impact shows through recent performances, such as his role in Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band and his 360 Band reunion with ex-AWB colleagues. His songwriting credits also extend to artists like Smokey Robinson and Diana Ross. He has also worked as a producer for Gordon Haskell and Meja.
In 2016, Stuart's contributions to the music industry were officially recognized when he received the BASCA Gold Badge award. He currently serves as a festival curator in Kent. This annual event is known as the mOare Music festival.
