In short: From studying science at Mithibai College to earning a PhD in complementary medicines, Hansa Yogendra has bridged the gap between ancient tradition and modern research. As director of The Yoga Institute, she has spent decades codifying yoga for schools, television, and clinical health applications.

Born on 8 October 1947, Hansa Yogendra belongs to a lineage of practitioners. She is the director of The Yoga Institute in Mumbai, a non-profit organization established in 1918 by her father-in-law, Yogendra. Although she comes from a Jain background, her studies are varied, including a science qualification from Mithibai College, a law certificate from Government Law College, Mumbai, and a PhD earned in February 2018 from The Open International University for Complementary Medicines.

Her influence extends far beyond the yoga mat into the realms of education and public policy. She worked with Jayadeva Yogendra in 1991 to assist the National Council of Educational Research and Training with creating a yoga curriculum for schools across India. Her work has also reached a massive audience through the 1980s television series 'Yoga for Better Living' on DD National, and through an extensive bibliography of books covering topics from diabetes and asthma to pregnancy and even yoga for the police.

Today, Yogendra holds significant leadership roles, including Chair of the Yoga Certification Committee for the Quality Council of India and President of the International Board of Yoga. Her efforts to synthesize a century of institutional research culminated in her 2018 book, 'Yoga For All', which was released in 2019 by the Governor of Maharashtra, C. Vidyasagar Rao. Her contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the 2019 National Yoga Award presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
