The desert club that pioneered Israeli football's European journey
In short: Hapoel Be'er Sheva didn't just emerge from the Negev desert; it survived geographical isolation and league suspensions to become a pioneer. From being barred from competition due to its distance from the capital to becoming the first Israeli team to play in Europe, its rise is a study in persistence.
The club's origins are rooted in the transit camps of the Be'er Sheva area. In 1949, Zalman Caspi, a footballer for Hapoel Ramat Gan, established a department to identify young talent in these camps. By April 1950, the group was officially established under the Hapoel Center. Their first match took place on May 1, 1950, a 5–4 victory over Hapoel Mefalsim, a team composed of South American immigrants. However, the club's early years were marked by institutional hurdles; in 1952, the Association suspended their official activity, claiming the geographical distance made participation impossible.
The club eventually re-registered in 1954 in the third league (Liga Gimel) and began a steady climb. A pivotal moment occurred in the 1964–65 season under Yugoslav coach Slavko Milošević, which saw the team qualify for the national league for the first time. This era also produced Abraham Noma, who would eventually win the Israeli Footballer of the Year award. The 1970s marked a golden age of growth, including a historic 3–1 victory over the English top-three side Aston Villa in the 1971–72 season.
The club's identity was further forged by innovation. In 1974–75, coach Amazia Levkovich introduced the 'attacking defender' style borrowed from German football, utilizing young players like Uri Benjamin and Jacob Cohen. This tactical shift helped the club secure its first Liga Leumit championship. Today, the club stands as a historic pioneer, holding the distinction of being the first Israeli team to compete in European competitions, alongside Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Tel Aviv.
