How Harry Styles transitioned from boy band stardom to a solo chart-topping force
In short: After One Direction entered an indefinite hiatus in 2016, Harry Styles faced the daunting task of redefining his musical identity. He did more than just survive the transition; he shattered records, becoming the first British male artist to debut two consecutive albums at the top of the Billboard 200.
Styles's solo journey truly commenced in April 2017 through his inaugural single, "Sign of the Times." This song achieved instant worldwide popularity, hitting number one in the UK and Australia, and number four on the US Billboard Hot 100. This momentum carried into his eponymous debut studio album in May 2017, which sold over a million copies globally and became one of the best-selling albums of that year.
Styles's second studio effort, Fine Line, released in December 2019, solidified his status as a heavyweight in the industry. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, marking the highest first-week sales for a British male act in the United States. With this launch, he became the initial British male singer to see his opening two albums debut at the peak of that particular chart. The album produced several hits, including "Watermelon Sugar," which secured his first number-one single in the United States.
His third studio album, Harry's House, arrived in May 2022 to widespread acclaim, reaching number one and earning multi-platinum certifications globally. The album's standout single, "As It Was," dominated the airwaves, spending 15 non-consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and earning the distinction of being the best-selling global single of 2022. To date, his solo discography includes four studio albums, one extended play, and one video album.
