From college standout to NFL analyst: the versatile career of Harry Douglas
In short: A wide receiver known for explosive plays and high-stakes controversy, Harry Douglas navigated a decade in the NFL. Beyond the yardage and touchdowns, his journey spans from the Louisville Cardinals to a prominent role as an ESPN analyst.
Harry Douglas IV entered the professional ranks as a third-round pick for the Atlanta Falcons in the 2008 NFL draft. Before his professional success, he established himself at the University of Louisville, where he earned a scholarship in 2003. His collegiate career was marked by significant milestones, including a 65-yard touchdown run in the 2004 AutoZone Liberty Bowl and a standout performance in the 2007 Orange Bowl, where he recorded 10 catches for 165 yards.
During his ten seasons in the NFL, Douglas demonstrated remarkable versatility. In his rookie season with the Falcons, he achieved a career high in offensive touches, totaling 188 yards through rushing, receiving, and punt returns in a single game against the Carolina Panthers. He joined a group of only nine previous Falcons to achieve a punt return touchdown. While he faced significant setbacks, including a knee injury in 2009 that sidelined him for the entire season, he achieved career highs in 2013, recording 1,067 yards and 85 receptions.
Douglas's career was not without friction. In 2016, while playing for the Tennessee Titans, a hit on Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. sparked widespread debate among players and journalists regarding player safety. Following his playing days, Douglas transitioned into media, serving as an NFL analyst for ESPN and a host on ESPN Radio. He also shares a unique athletic legacy with his brother, Toney Douglas, making them the sixth pair of brothers to play in both the NFL and the NBA.
