The Qatari captain who led his nation to unprecedented continental glory
In short: From a promising eight-year-old at Al Sadd to a national icon, Hassan Al-Haydos has redefined Qatari football. As a prolific forward and record-breaking captain, his journey includes leading Qatar to two Asian Cup titles and scoring on the world stage.
Hassan Al-Haydos's career is defined by longevity and leadership. After joining Al Sadd at age eight and reaching the first team at seventeen, he became the most capped player in Qatari history. His international career is marked by significant milestones, including his senior national team debut on 10 September 2008 against Bahrain and a historic appearance in Qatar's first-ever FIFA World Cup match against Ecuador on 20 November 2022.
His impact extends beyond mere statistics. Al-Haydos captained Qatar to two Asian Cup victories, in 2019 and 2023. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he demonstrated his enduring value by scoring against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 42nd minute—the only goal scored by a Qatari player during that specific tournament, as Qatar's other goal was an own goal against Switzerland.
The forward's domestic success is equally notable. He has been a central figure for Al Sadd across multiple winning seasons in the Qatar Stars League and various cup competitions. His individual excellence was recognized early when he was named the Qatar Football Association's Most Promising Player in 2008, and later voted 'Best Qatari Player' in 2014 by a panel of analysts and coaches.
Despite announcing his retirement from international football on 16 March 2024, Al-Haydos's influence remains palpable. He returned to the national team in July 2025 to prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, underscoring a career built on resilience and consistent performance at the highest levels of Asian and global football.
