How a local youth initiative became a Qatari football powerhouse
In short: Founded in 1979 to provide sports facilities for local youth, Al-Gharafa SC did not set out to dominate Qatari football. Yet, through strategic leadership and a deep affinity for Brazilian football, this club broke a 16-year monopoly to become one of the nation's most successful sporting institutions.
Originally established on 6 June 1979 as Al-Ittihad, the club was born from a suggestion by sports journalist Saad Al-Rumaihi. Its founders, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani and Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani, chose the name Al-Ittihad—meaning 'United'—to symbolize brotherhood. Even the club's iconic yellow and blue colors were a nod to the Brazilian national team.
Despite its late entry into the Qatari football scene, the club saw immediate success. After dominating the 2nd Division with titles in the 1979/80, 1980/81, and 1983/84 seasons, Al-Gharafa achieved a historic breakthrough in the 1991–92 season. By winning the Stars League, they ended a 16-year period of dominance held by Al-Arabi, Al Sadd, and Al-Rayyan.
The club's evolution continued in 2004 when it was officially renamed Al-Gharafa to reflect its home district. This era saw significant milestones, including a 2004/05 league title where the team lost only once in 27 games. The club also became known for individual brilliance, such as Araújo's record-breaking season where he scored 27 goals, surpassing Gabriel Batistuta's mark of 25.
Today, Al-Gharafa maintains a massive footprint in player development. As of 2013, the club's youth ranks included approximately 350 players, split between 100 in its academy and 240 in grassroots programs. This infrastructure supports their continued presence at the top of Qatari football, playing out of the 27,000-capacity Thani bin Jassim Stadium.
