Hecate: The Titan Who Defied Her Kin to Become Goddess of the Crossroads
In short: Hecate is a complex Greek deity associated with magic, the moon, and the liminal spaces of life. This overview examines her unique role as a protector of diverse groups and her pivotal involvement in the myth of Persephone.
Originally a Titan, Hecate secured her status among the Olympians by siding with them during the Titanomachy. Unlike her defeated kin, who were cast into Tartarus, she maintained her power and influence. She is frequently represented in art with three heads or three bodies, often accompanied by torches, keys, or dogs.
Her domain is vast, encompassing witchcraft, necromancy, and the protection of those at life's boundaries, including women in labor and children. She is also known as Trivia in Roman mythology. Her role as a helper is perhaps most famous in the abduction of Persephone, where she used her torches to assist Demeter in the search for her daughter.
