How one man saved 669 children from Nazi-occupied territory before World War II

Helena Bonham Carter Reveals the Fascinating History Behind New ‘One Life’ Film · 19:50 · Video: History Hit · Watch at the source

In short: Dan Snow interviews the cast of One Life, a film detailing the true story of Nicholas Winton. Discover how a London broker orchestrated a desperate rescue mission in 1938 and the long-term emotional impact of his humanitarian efforts.

In December 1938, London broker Nicholas Winton visited Prague and encountered families fleeing Nazi expansion. Finding these refugees in dire conditions, Winton initiated a race against time to evacuate children before borders closed. He successfully brought 669 children to safety in England.

The film explores the lingering trauma Winton faced for five decades, as he remained haunted by the children he could not save. This burden of guilt was only addressed in 1988, when the BBC television show That’s Life reunited him with some of the survivors, who were by then adults.
