Why this Texas town earned the unusual nickname The Town Without a Toothache
In short: Deep in the Texas Panhandle, Hereford is known as the Beef Capital of the World, but its most curious claim to fame is dental. Thanks to naturally high fluoride levels in the local water supply, generations of residents have enjoyed a unique protection against decay that defined the city’s identity.
Founded in 1899 as Blue Water, the settlement was renamed Hereford to honor the cattle breed that dominated the local ranching economy. Situated on the Llano Estacado, the city once relied on numerous windmills to draw fresh water from the Ogallala Aquifer, earning it the moniker Windmill City. Today, this semiarid region remains a hub for agriculture, supported by irrigation from the Ogallala and the saltier Santa Rosa Aquifer.
Beyond its agricultural output, Hereford has a complex social history. During World War II, the area hosted a prisoner-of-war camp for Italian soldiers, which remained operational until 1947. Decades later, in 1975, the city became the site of a high-profile legal battle when teacher Wayne Woodward was fired for attempting to organize a local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. The incident, which resulted in a lawsuit against the school district, was later examined in Timothy P. Bowman’s 2022 historical account, You Will Never Be One of Us.
The city has produced notable figures across various fields, including legal philosopher Lon L. Fuller, actor Ron Ely, and astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who walked on the Moon during the 1971 Apollo 14 mission. Despite its small population of 14,972 as of the 2020 census, Hereford maintains a distinct cultural footprint. In 2015, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer even identified it as the most conservative city in the United States based on political contribution data, highlighting the unique character of this West Texas community.
