Why this small Texas town became a magnet for Hollywood and barbecue lovers
In short: Lockhart, Texas, is far more than a quiet county seat. Known as the barbecue capital of the state, this historic town has transformed into a sought-after filming location for major productions, all while maintaining its Victorian-era character just thirty miles south of the bustling city of Austin.
Named after Byrd Lockhart, an early surveyor and the first Anglo settler in the area, the town was once known as Plum Creek. It gained prominence following the 1840 Battle of Plum Creek, a conflict between Texans and the Comanche. By 1848, it was established as the seat of Caldwell County, and by the end of the 1850s, it had already developed a school, a newspaper, and several churches.
The town's economic trajectory shifted dramatically in 1887 with the introduction of rail transport. The Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad turned the community into a vital shipping hub for regional commodities like cotton, cattle, and grain. This infrastructure supported steady growth throughout the 20th century, allowing the town to preserve its unique architectural identity, which critics like Colin Rowe and John Hejduk later described as a remarkably eloquent example of a post-frontier Victorian settlement.
Today, Lockhart is celebrated for its cultural landmarks, including the Dr. Eugene Clark Library, which holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating public library in Texas housed in its original structure. Its aesthetic appeal has made it a favorite for filmmakers, serving as a backdrop for movies such as Waiting for Guffman and What's Eating Gilbert Grape, as well as the HBO series The Leftovers. Despite its cinematic fame, the city remains a small community of 14,379 people, defined by its local traditions and its status as a premier destination for Texas barbecue.
