In short: Beyond simple fortune-telling lies a complex system of stacked lines and mathematical permutations. By combining broken and unbroken symbols, the I Ching creates a structural language of change, where every movement of a single line can transform a symbol into its opposite, its mirror, or its hidden core.

At the heart of the I Ching lies the hexagram, a figure composed of six stacked horizontal lines known as yáo. These lines exist in two states: Yang, represented by a solid, unbroken line, and Yin, represented by a broken line with a gap in the center. These lines are read from the bottom up, starting with line one and ending with line six. By arranging the eight fundamental trigrams into various combinations, the system generates 64 distinct hexagrams. The Chinese term used to describe these figures is guà, a word that can also refer to a single trigram.

The complexity of the system is revealed through the relationships between these figures. A hexagram can be inverted to create a 'Contrasting' or 'Reverse' hexagram. By flipping every line to its opposite state, one produces a 'Complementary' hexagram. Perhaps most intriguing is the 'Nuclear' or 'Mutual' hexagram (hù guà), which is derived by extracting the inner lines of an existing figure—specifically lines 2, 3, 4, 3, 4, and 5—to reveal a hidden internal structure. This process of transformation allows for a deep structural analysis of the text's symbolic logic.

The arrangement of these 64 patterns is not monolithic. While the King Wen sequence is the most widely recognized, historical variations exist. The Mawangdui Silk Texts reveal a different sequence entirely, and other arrangements include the Binary, Fu Xi, or Shao Yong sequences. Each hexagram, along with its individual lines, is traditionally accompanied by descriptions that often function like cryptic parables, offering layers of interpretation for the reader. Modern technology even offers an AI-adapted version of these classic texts. These various sequences demonstrate the enduring mathematical depth of the system.
