How a pirate kingdom and a catastrophic storm shaped a major American port city
In short: Galveston began as a refuge for buccaneers before rising to become a premier commercial hub. Yet, its trajectory was permanently altered by the deadliest natural disaster in United States history. Today, this resilient island city balances its storied past with a modern economy built on medicine, shipping, and tourism.
The island's history is marked by shifting colonial claims and colorful inhabitants. Spanish explorer Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca likely wrecked there in 1528, while French explorer La Salle claimed the land in 1686. By the early 19th century, the island became a base for the pirate Jean Laffite, who operated his own settlement from 1817 until 1821. Formal development accelerated in 1834 when Michel B. Menard established the Galveston City Company, leading to the city's incorporation in 1839.
During the 19th century, Galveston emerged as a vital commercial center and a primary port for the Texas Navy. It even functioned as the temporary seat of government for the Republic of Texas in 1836 as the conflict with Mexico unfolded. The city's prominence as a leading port and commercial hub was eventually challenged by the rise of Houston and, more dramatically, by the hurricane of September 8, 1900. This category 4 storm brought 130-mile-per-hour winds and a surge that claimed over 8,000 lives, devastating the infrastructure.
In the aftermath, the city constructed a massive 17-foot-high seawall to protect against future surges. While the wall successfully mitigated damage during later storms like the 1961 hurricane and Hurricane Ike in 2008, it could not prevent all flooding. Today, the city has reinvented itself through the University of Texas Medical Branch, established in 1881, and a thriving tourism industry centered on the historic Strand district and attractions like Moody Gardens.
