From Stone Age settlements to a modern industrial powerhouse, the story of Gujarat
In short: Human presence in Gujarat stretches back hundreds of thousands of years, evolving from ancient river valley civilizations to a central hub of global trade. Today, this Indian state remains a focal point of political and cultural transformation, defined by its complex history of empires, independence movements, and modern industrial development.
The history of Gujarat begins in the Stone Age, with early settlements traced to the valleys of the Sabarmati and Mahi rivers. By the 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE, the region became a flourishing center for the Indus civilization, with major sites like Dholavira and Lothal established in the Kathiawar Peninsula. The formal historical record emerges with the Mauryan dynasty, evidenced by the 3rd-century BCE rock edicts of the emperor Ashoka found in the Girnar Hills.
Following the Mauryan decline, the region saw a succession of powers, including the Shakas, the Gupta empire, and the Maitraka dynasty, whose capital at Valabhipura served as a renowned center for Buddhist, Vedic, and Jain learning. The 8th and 9th centuries brought the Gurjara-Pratiharas, followed by the Solanki dynasty, under which Gujarat reached its peak economic and cultural influence. By 1299, the Vaghela dynasty fell to ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn Khaljī, marking the beginning of centuries of Muslim rule, which culminated in the Mughal era and the founding of Ahmedabad by Aḥmed Shah in 1411.
The landscape shifted dramatically in 1818 when the British East India Company assumed control. After the 1857–58 Indian Mutiny, the region was integrated into the British crown's territories. Following independence in 1947, Gujarat was initially part of Bombay state until May 1, 1960, when it was partitioned into the present-day states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. The modern era has been marked by significant challenges, including the 2001 Bhuj earthquake and the 2002 communal riots, yet the state remains a central force in Indian politics, notably under the leadership of Narendra Modi, who served as chief minister before becoming prime minister in 2014.
