In short: Norway’s history is a story of adaptation to a harsh, glaciated landscape. From early hunter-gatherers and Viking expansionists to a puppet state under Denmark and finally a prosperous modern nation, Norway’s trajectory was shaped by its geography, the discovery of oil, and a unique tradition of local self-governance.

The story of Norway begins with the retreat of ice sheets around 10,000 BC, drawing hunter-gatherers to the coast. By 4,000 BC, agriculture emerged around the Oslofjord, eventually spreading across southern Norway. As the population grew, a distinct social structure formed: clans led by chieftains who managed resources and settled disputes at sacred assemblies known as things. This period also saw the development of runes and early trade with Romans, setting the stage for the Viking Age.

The Viking Age, beginning with the 793 raid on Lindisfarne, saw Norwegians expand across the seas to Iceland, Greenland, and parts of the British Isles. This era also marked the country's unification under Harald Fairhair and the eventual Christianization of the population. However, the 14th century brought devastation; the Black Death in 1349 halved the population, weakening the monarchy and leading to the Kalmar Union with Denmark and Sweden. By 1537, Norway had been demoted to a puppet state under Denmark, losing its Council of State and adopting Danish as a written language.

Norway’s path to independence was long and complex. Following the Napoleonic Wars, the 1814 Treaty of Kiel ceded Norway to Sweden, but the nation declared independence and adopted its own constitution. A personal union with Sweden followed, lasting until 1905. The 20th century brought rapid modernization, fueled by hydroelectricity and the 1969 discovery of oil. Today, Norway manages its vast wealth through the world's largest sovereign wealth fund, a stark contrast to its origins as a collection of scattered farming and fishing communities.
