How Catherine the Great and Alexander I transformed Russia into a European superpower

History of Russia Part 3: Age of Glory · 8:59 · Video: Epic History · Watch at the source

In short: This video examines the Russian Empire's era of immense territorial growth and cultural refinement. It tracks the shift from Catherine the Great's enlightened autocracy to the existential military struggles against Napoleon, revealing how these rulers reshaped the map and identity of Russia.

Catherine the Great’s reign was defined by significant expansion, including the annexation of Crimea and the Partition of Poland. Under the guidance of Count Potemkin, the region of Novorossiya was settled by Russian colonists, while the empire diversified through the arrival of European migrants like the Volga Germans and the establishment of the Pale of Settlement for Jewish residents. Following the French Revolution and the execution of Louis XVI, Catherine abandoned her earlier liberal leanings.

The subsequent reign of Emperor Paul ended abruptly in a palace coup, despite military successes by Marshal Suvorov. His successor, Alexander I, navigated a period of intense conflict, most notably the 1812 French invasion. After the Battle of Borodino and the destruction of Moscow, Napoleon’s Grande Armee was decimated. Alexander’s rule further extended Russian influence through the annexation of Finland and expansion into the Caucasus and Balkans, culminating in his assumption of the title King of Poland.
