In short: In 1861, a desperate 100-mile trek through enemy territory helped break a siege. While this feat is recognized as the earliest action to earn the Medal of Honor, the award itself hadn't even been created yet, and the recipient waited decades for his recognition.

The origins of the nation's highest military honor are rooted in the volatility of the American frontier. The earliest action eventually recognized with the Medal of Honor took place during a conflict between the U.S. Army and the Chiricahua Apache. This period of unrest began when Chief Cochise kidnapped three white men, seeking an exchange for his brother and two nephews who were being held by the U.S. Army on charges of kidnapping and cattle theft. When the exchange was denied, Cochise killed the captives, and the subsequent military retaliation against his relatives ignited the first of the Apache wars.

Colonel Bernard J.D. Irwin led a pivotal mission during this struggle. Alongside 14 men, Irwin began a grueling 100-mile journey on mules, initially lacking horses. Along the route, his group engaged in combat and successfully recovered stolen livestock. By February 13, 1861, they reached the besieged forces of Bascom, playing a vital role in breaking the siege. Although this specific bravery constitutes the earliest Medal of Honor action, the medal was not established until 1862. Furthermore, the recognition was delayed by decades; Irwin did not actually receive the honor until January 21, 1894.

The evolution of American military recognition has been significant. During the Revolutionary War, the 'Badge of Military Merit' was a cloth, heart-shaped award that later became the basis for the Purple Heart in 1932. While the Mexican-American War saw the first systematic recognition of enlisted personnel through certificates and cash, the Medal of Honor was designed to meet the unique demands of the Civil War. Today, the award is reserved for those who demonstrate conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life, far above the call of duty.
