History

From Taung Child to apartheid’s negotiated end

Southern Africa cradled human evolution: Australopithecus finds and Klasies River modern humans about 125,000 years ago. Dutch settlers arrived at the Cape in 1652; diamonds and gold later drew empire. Apartheid ruled from 1948 until the 1994 democratic election.

Khoisan peoples—San hunter-gatherers and Khoikhoi pastoralists—are linked to the earliest separations among living humans. Bantu-speaking groups moved south from central Africa, limited north of the Soutpansberg until the later Middle Iron Age (1000–1300), then entering the interior. Mapungubwe (about 900–1300 CE) near the Limpopo–Shashe confluence became the first indigenous kingdom in southern Africa, trading gold and ivory for Chinese porcelain and Persian beads before climate change forced abandonment.

Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Storms in 1488; Vasco da Gama passed Natal at Christmas 1497 en route to India. The Dutch East India Company under Jan van Riebeeck founded a resupply post at Table Bay on 6 April 1652, importing free burghers and some 71,000 slaves from India, Indonesia, East Africa, and Madagascar. Khoikhoi–Dutch wars (1659, 1673, 1674–1677) and smallpox devastated peninsula Khoikhoi. British seizures in 1795 and 1806 spurred the Great Trek and Boer republics; diamond and gold rushes industrialised the interior and fed the Anglo–Boer conflict of 1899–1902.

Four British colonies merged on 31 May 1910 into a self-governing dominion; full sovereignty within the Empire came in 1934, and a republic followed a 1960 referendum on 31 May 1961. Apartheid’s racial order dominated from 1948. On 2 February 1990 F. W. de Klerk unbanned the ANC and released Nelson Mandela; CODESA talks won them the Nobel Peace Prize. The ANC took a majority on 27 April 1994 in the first democratic election, losing that majority only in 2024.

After diamonds and gold transformed the interior economy, the 1899–1902 war and the later 1910 unification reshaped political geography. Apartheid-era legislation and the 1994 democratic transition dominate the country's more recent history. Earlier Khoikhoi–Dutch wars and smallpox on the peninsula sit beside VOC slavery imports numbering tens of thousands as foundational colonial dynamics.
