How Did Constantinople Survive the Ottoman Siege of 1422?

How Constantinople Survived an Ottoman Siege - Medieval DOCUMENTARY · 23:56 · Video: Kings and Generals · Watch at the source

In short: This documentary explores the geopolitical pressures that allowed Constantinople to withstand Ottoman aggression. It traces the rise of the Ottoman state, the strategic failures of Western crusades, and the internal conflicts that repeatedly forced the Ottomans to abandon their sieges of the Byzantine capital.

The survival of Constantinople was rarely due to a single victory, but rather the shifting priorities of the Ottoman sultans. Following the defeat of Bayezid I by the conqueror Timur at the Battle of Ankara in 1402, the Ottoman state descended into a brutal civil war known as the interregnum. This period of internal instability provided the Byzantine Empire with a temporary reprieve from total collapse.

Earlier, in the late 14th century, Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos had sought military aid from Western Europe to break Bayezid I's blockade of the city, but his efforts yielded no support. Even after the Ottomans regained their strength under Mehmed I and his son Murad II, the city remained a target, culminating in the siege of 1422. The documentary contextualizes these events within centuries of conflict, including the 1071 Battle of Manzikert and the devastating 1204 sack of the city.
