How a century of Viking invasion forced the creation of a unified England

How England Was Forged by War - Medieval History DOCUMENTARY · 23:33 · Video: Kings and Generals · Watch at the source

In short: England did not emerge overnight. This documentary explores how a fractured collection of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms survived the onslaught of the Great Heathen Army to forge a single, unified nation under the leadership of Wessex.

Following the Roman withdrawal, Britain was a patchwork of rival Anglo-Saxon realms. This fragile stability was shattered by Norse invaders, who transitioned from coastal raiders to a conquering force known as the Great Heathen Army. As Viking forces dismantled nearly every other kingdom, Wessex stood as the final bastion of resistance.

Under King Alfred the Great, Wessex pivoted from near-total collapse to a strategic recovery, marked by the pivotal victory at Edington. This success enabled Alfred and his successors—Edward the Elder and Æthelflæd of Mercia—to systematically reclaim territory from the Danelaw. The process culminated in 927 with King Æthelstan’s capture of York, marking the first time England was unified under one ruler.
