How Persia became the world's first superpower through radical tolerance

How Did Ancient Persia Become So Powerful? · 24:29 · Video: Made In History · Watch at the source

In short: Most empires were built on crushing diversity into uniformity. The Persian Empire did the opposite. By allowing conquered people to keep their own religions, languages, and traditions, Cyrus the Great created a model of governance that turned a collection of subjects into a global identity.

The rise of Persia was born from necessity and geopolitical shifts in the 7th century BC. After the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal sacked Susa in 646 BC, the small kingdoms of the western Iranian plateau were forced to coalesce into larger, more centralized states to survive Assyrian pressure. This consolidation eventually birthed the Median Empire, which established the first Iranian empire and laid the groundwork for Persian expansion.

The turning point came with Cyrus the Great. In 559 BC, he rose from a tribal leader of the Parsua people to overthrow the Medes, Lydians, and Neo-Babylonians. While his predecessors relied on conquest, Cyrus implemented 'benign policies' that prioritized reconciliation. By allowing subjects to maintain their unique cultural identities, he facilitated a global exchange of ideas that stabilized his rule and allowed for unprecedented longevity.

The empire reached its zenith under Darius I, who standardized the economy with gold darics and silver shekels and improved infrastructure with the Royal Road from Susa to Sardis. His reign saw the construction of Persepolis in 518 BC and a canal between the Nile and Red Sea—a forerunner to the Suez Canal. By ruling over Europe, Asia, and Africa, Persia became the largest empire in human history up to that point, proving that respect for diversity could be a more durable engine of power than mere domination.

This model was so effective that even Greek historians like Xenophon noted Cyrus 'eclipsed all other monarchs.' The Persian system wasn't just about land; it was the world's first superpower based on a deliberate architecture of tolerance, creating an imperial identity that still influences modern concepts of multicultural governance.
