How one man built the world's first true superpower

The Persian Empire: How Cyrus the Great Built One of History’s Greatest Empires | Documentary · 26:22 · Video: Untold Origins · Watch at the source

In short: Cyrus the Great didn't just conquer land; he engineered an imperial identity. By allowing conquered peoples to keep their own languages and religions, he created a global exchange that turned a tribal territory into history's first true superpower.

Born between 590 and 580 BCE, Cyrus II rose from the position of a tribal leader of the Parsua people. At the time, Persia was effectively a vassal state to the more powerful Median Empire. His ascent began in earnest during the 580s BCE, following his parents' marriage—a political move by the Median king Astyages to secure an alliance. However, Cyrus would eventually rise to conquer the Medes and expand Persian influence from eastern Europe to the Indus River.

Cyrus’s reign was defined by a sophisticated policy of tolerance. Unlike previous empires that often erased local identities, Cyrus allowed conquered subjects to maintain their traditions and faiths. This approach facilitated a unique cultural exchange that helped sustain his vast territories, which stretched across Mesopotamia, Anatolia, and Egypt. His legacy is so profound that the Greek historian Xenophon described him as eclipsing all other monarchs, while the Hebrew Bible remembers him as the liberator of the Jews from Babylonian captivity.

The architectural and administrative foundations laid by Cyrus were later refined by his successors. Darius I founded Persepolis in 518 BCE as a monumental expression of Achaemenid power, establishing a sophisticated imperial system featuring satrapies and the Royal Road. While much of what we know about Cyrus comes from Greek sources like Herodotus—whose accounts often lean into folk beliefs and superhuman qualities—archaeological evidence confirms his role in creating an empire that connected diverse worlds for centuries.

Today, the ruins of Persepolis at the foot of Kuh-e Rahmat serve as a testament to this era. Cyrus's ability to balance absolute power with cultural pluralism remains a primary reason he is studied as an ideal monarch. He transformed Persia from a regional power into a global model of governance that inspired empires for millennia.
