The 1066 coin hoard that rewrites Harold Godwinson's legacy

How Harold was depicted before the Bayeux Tapestry (and what it tells us) | Curator's Corner Ep101 · 14:23 · Video: The British Museum · Watch at the source

In short: Most people remember Harold II only for his defeat at Hastings. However, a 2023 discovery in Yorkshire offers a rare, tangible look at his actual reign, revealing a king with surprisingly rapid administrative power.

The York Area coin hoard is the first recorded collection of coins that can be definitively dated to 1066. Because these coins were struck exclusively during Harold's brief 282-day reign, they provide evidence of a monarch whose authority was recognized across England.

The speed at which the government produced new currency suggests a highly efficient and capable administration, challenging the narrative of a king struggling for legitimacy. The British Museum currently has the hoard on display in Gallery 68 until July 2027.
