Largest Iron Age Hoard EVER Found (900 Coins!) · 21:01 · Video: History Hit · Watch at the source

In short: Discovered in a field in 2020, the Great Baddow Hoard consists of 935 gold staters. Despite recent archaeological excavations and advanced geophysical surveys, the reason this massive fortune was buried and never recovered remains unknown. Experts are now displaying the entire collection to explore its enduring, silent secrets.

The Great Baddow Hoard, unearthed near Chelmsford, Essex, stands as the largest collection of Iron Age gold coins ever found in Britain. Originally consisting of 933 pieces, the total grew to 935 after a fresh excavation in autumn 2025 by Archaeology South-East. Senior Archaeologist Rob Cullum recovered two additional 'Whaddon Chase' staters from a two-metre-square trench, which were later acquired by the Museum of Chelmsford in April 2026.

These coins, featuring a horse on the obverse and a wreath design on the reverse, date back to the Late Iron Age. Their burial coincides roughly with the period of Julius Caesar’s invasions of Britain, specifically the 54 BC campaign. Because the coins are gold, they were formally declared as treasure under the UK Treasure Act and processed through the Portable Antiquities Scheme before joining the wider collection.

Despite rigorous efforts to understand the site, the mystery of the hoard’s origin persists. A geophysical survey led by Dr. Kris Lockyear failed to identify any significant landscape anomalies, and the 2025 excavation provided no context regarding the burial. Curatorial and Exhibitions Officer Claire Willetts notes that theories range from ritual offerings to the gods to tribute payments linked to Caesar’s arrival, or perhaps a cache meant to be retrieved by its owner but abandoned.

The full collection is now the focus of the exhibition 'Timeless Treasures: Unlocking the Great Baddow Coin Hoard,' running from 18 July 2026 until 11 April 2027 at the Museum of Chelmsford. This exhibition invites visitors to consider the nature of treasure across millennia before the hoard moves to a permanent home in the museum's Prehistory Gallery.
