The hunt for the pride of the Kriegsmarine: sinking the battleship Bismarck

Hunt The Bismarck: The Royal Navy's Operation To Destroy Hitler's Battleship · 49:45 · Video: Timeline - World History Documentaries · Watch at the source

In short: This documentary examines the Royal Navy's mission to intercept the German battleship Bismarck during its maiden voyage in 1941. It details the strategic intent behind Operation Rheinubung and the high-stakes naval engagement that followed as Britain fought to protect its vital Atlantic trade routes from destruction.

Launched on 14 February 1939, the Bismarck was the flagship of the German Kriegsmarine. On 19 May 1941, it departed the Baltic coast for Operation Rheinubung, a mission designed to disrupt Allied merchant shipping and starve Britain of essential supplies. The German command even included a film crew on the accompanying ship, Prinz Eugen, intending to document the Bismarck's first combat success.

The Royal Navy responded by deploying its most powerful vessels, including the HMS Hood, to intercept the German sortie. The resulting confrontation, known as the Battle of Denmark Strait, occurred on 24 May 1941, involving the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen against the British ships HMS Hood and Prince of Wales. This documentary features insights from naval historian Nick Hewitt, author Angus Konstam, and National Maritime Museum curator Andrew Choong.
