The complex hierarchy and hidden meanings within the Israel Defense Forces ranks
In short: From the shoulder epaulettes of officers to the colorful aiguillettes of specialists, military rank is more than just status. In the IDF, these symbols reveal a person's training, their branch of service, and even their specific role within a unit's complex structure.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) utilizes a unified ranking system across its army, navy, and air force, a structure inherited from the Haganah paramilitary group that protected the Yishuv during the Mandate period. The hierarchy is divided into three distinct groups: enlisted personnel, non-commissioned officers (NCOs), and officers. While enlisted ranks like Private are displayed on the arm, NCO and officer ranks are worn on shoulder epaulettes. Interestingly, the insignia material varies by branch: the army uses black-metal insignia (updated from bronze in 2002), the navy uses gold, and the air force uses silver.
Promotion and service duration are often tied to gender and specialization. For example, male conscripts serve 32 months, while females serve 24 months. Officers face even longer commitments, with men serving at least 44 months and women in non-combat roles serving 36 months; however, pilots must serve over seven years. While some ranks are earned through time in service, others are based on professional education. 'Academic officers' hold specific ranks like kama or ka'ab based on their professional expertise in fields like law or medicine, and their insignia features scrolls rather than laurel branches.
The system also contains historical layers and specialized identifiers. Certain ranks, such as the 'substitute officer' (Mamak), were discontinued in 1994, while others like the 'chief private first class' (Ratash) existed only between 1972 and 1982. Beyond rank, 'aiguillettes'—colored cords worn on the left shoulder—denote specific roles. These colors range from azure for the Ceremony Unit to burgundy and grey for special-needs tutors, providing a visual map of the specialized manpower within the force.
