From paramilitary roots to a unified force: the evolution of Israel's ground arm

In short: The Israeli Ground Forces did not emerge from a single institution. Instead, they were forged from a patchwork of Jewish paramilitary groups and underground organizations, eventually consolidating into a formal army through complex political orders and internal confrontations that shaped the modern military's very structure.

The origins of the Israeli Ground Forces are rooted in the New Yishuv, beginning with the Second Aliyah between 1904 and 1914. Early defense efforts began with Bar-Giora in 1907, which evolved into Hashomer in 1909. These early groups were primarily focused on protecting property from criminal gangs. As tensions rose, the Haganah was established in June 1920 following the Palestine riots of April 1920. This organization eventually developed a sophisticated structure including the Palmach and specialized corps.

The transition to a national army was marked by significant political friction. On 26 May 1948, David Ben-Gurion ordered the creation of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as a conscript army, absorbing the Haganah and the militant Irgun and Lehi groups. This consolidation was not seamless; the Altalena Affair, a standoff involving an Irgun arms shipment, resulted in the IDF shelling the ship. Following this, all independent underground units were eventually merged into the IDF.

While the IDF has been involved in nearly every major regional conflict since 1948—including the Suez Crisis, the Six-Day War, and the Yom Kippur War—the Ground Forces themselves have a unique organizational history. They operated without a separate command until 1998, when they were formally brought under a single command known as GOC Army Headquarters. Today, the force utilizes advanced domestic technology, such as the Merkava tank and the Trophy active protection system, while maintaining a tradition of using uniform rank names across all military branches.
