The high school pitcher who went 35–3 and never lost.
In short: Before he was a Major League mainstay, Jack Flaherty was a statistical anomaly. During his final two years of high school, he amassed a perfect 23–0 record. He didn't just win; he dominated, culminating in a no-hitter that cemented his status as a national phenom.
Flaherty’s rise began at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles. During his junior year in 2013, he achieved an impressive 13–0 mark and a 0.63 ERA, fanning 112 hitters while issuing just 10 walks. By his senior year, the school was ranked as the nation's #1 team by MaxPreps. His dominance peaked in 2014 when he finished the regular season with a 10–0 record and an 0.63 ERA, eventually being named the Gatorade Player of the Year for California.
His path to the pros was marked by elite pedigree and high-stakes competition. He played on the U.S. national team at the 2013 18U Baseball World Cup, helping secure a Gold Medal. He chose to turn professional after the St. Louis Cardinals took him as a first-round compensatory pick in the 2014 MLB draft—a vacancy created by Carlos Beltrán joining the Yankees as a free agent—even though he had previously committed to the University of North Carolina.
In the majors, Flaherty became known for his ability to peak under pressure. In 2019, he recorded a 0.91 ERA during the second half of the season, the third-lowest in MLB history behind only Bob Gibson and Jake Arrieta. His career has been a journey through several storied franchises, including the Cardinals, Orioles, Tigers, and Dodgers, culminating in his return to Detroit in early 2025 after signing a two-year, $35 million deal.
Beyond the mound, Flaherty’s identity is rooted in advocacy. Identifying as biracial and Black, he has been an active supporter of social justice movements like Black Lives Matter since his rise to prominence.
