From walk-on to All-Pro: the remarkable ascent of Jack Conklin
In short: Most NFL stars are recruited as highly touted prospects, but Jack Conklin began his journey at Michigan State as a walk-on. His rapid rise from a college underdog to an eighth overall draft pick and two-time All-Pro illustrates a rare level of professional dominance and resilience.
Born in Plainwell, Michigan, on August 17, 1994, Conklin's path to professional football was anything but guaranteed. Having competed in high school football alongside his father, Darren Conklin entered Michigan State University's football programme as a walk-on. His talent was undeniable; after redshirting his first year, he started 13 of 14 games in 2013 and all 13 games as a sophomore at left tackle.
By his junior year, Conklin had become a dominant force, allowing only two sacks and incurring just two penalties. This performance led to him being named a 2015 First-team All-American by Sporting News and USA Today, as well as a First-team All-Big Ten Conference selection. These accolades made him a top-10 prospect, eventually leading the Tennessee Titans to select him eighth overall in the 2016 NFL draft.
Conklin's professional career has been marked by both elite production and significant injury hurdles. After signing a four-year, $15.89 million rookie contract with the Titans, he earned First-team All-Pro honors in his rookie season. Despite suffering a torn ACL in January 2018 and various other injuries, including a patellar tendon tear in 2021 and a torn ACL and MCL in 2023, he remained a premier talent. This resilience was rewarded when he signed a massive four-year, $60 million contract extension with the Cleveland Browns in December 2022.
His impact extends beyond individual accolades. During his tenure with the Titans, he helped the team achieve four consecutive 9–7 seasons and a playoff berth in 2017. In 2019, his blocking was instrumental in Derrick Henry winning the NFL rushing yards title. Conklin's ability to maintain elite status, earning another All-Pro nod in 2020, cements his reputation as one of the premier offensive tackles in the league.
