The trailblazing wrestler who broke the glass ceiling of professional wrestling championships
In short: From training as the only woman in a Dallas gym to becoming a Hall of Fame legend, Jacqueline Moore redefined what was possible in the ring. She didn't just compete; she shattered gendered boundaries, becoming a champion in divisions traditionally reserved for men.
Born on January 6, 1964, Jacqueline Moore began her journey in professional wrestling after training at a local gym following a meeting with manager Skandor Akbar. As the sole female student in Akbar's Dallas wrestling school, she transitioned from her early persona, 'Sweet Georgia Brown,' to a dominant force in the United States Wrestling Association (USWA). There, she became the inaugural USWA Women's Champion in March 1992 and held the title eight times through 1996.
Moore's career is marked by significant historical firsts. In 1993, she was the first woman included in the Pro Wrestling Illustrated 500. During her tenure with the WWF, she became the first African-American Women's Champion. Perhaps most impressively, in May 2004, she defeated Chavo Guerrero to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship—a title predominantly held by men. She was only the third woman to achieve this feat, and the only one to do so under the WWE banner.
Her versatility extended beyond wrestling to management and officiating. She served as a manager for Kevin Sullivan and the group Harlem Heat in WCW, and later worked as a referee and trainer for the WWF. Her impact was formally recognized on April 2, 2016, when she was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, making history as the first Black woman to receive the honor. Her storied career spanned major promotions including WCW, TNA, and the USWA, leaving a permanent mark on the industry.
