In short: Jay Feely spent decades perfecting the art of the long-distance kick, breaking franchise records and hitting game-winners. Now, he is trading the football for a different kind of play. After retiring from the NFL, Feely has pivoted from sports analyst to Republican congressional candidate.

Feely's path to professional success was defined by high-volume precision. A four-year letterman at the University of Michigan (1994–1998), he established a reputation for accuracy, finishing his college career with 20 field goals and 43 extra points. After going undrafted in 1999, he spent time in the Arena Football League before breaking into the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons in 2001. During that rookie season, he tied for second in scoring among NFC kickers, a feat that earned him consensus all-rookie honors.

His professional career was marked by both record-breaking peaks and high-pressure moments. With the Falcons, he shattered Morten Andersen's franchise record for most field goals in a single season. Later, with the Miami Dolphins in 2007, he achieved the most productive year of his career, setting a new franchise mark for field goal percentage at 91.3%. However, the life of a kicker is often subject to intense public scrutiny; after three missed attempts in an overtime loss with the New York Giants in 2005, Feely became the subject of a parody sketch on Saturday Night Live.

Following his retirement from active play, Feely transitioned into media as a color analyst for CBS Sports Network. He has worked alongside prominent figures like Beth Mowins and Sanjay Gupta, providing expert commentary on both college and professional football. In 2025, he announced his transition into politics, initially seeking to run in Arizona's 5th district before shifting his focus to the 1st district for the 2026 election. Now a Republican nominee endorsed by Donald Trump, Feely is leveraging his public profile to pursue a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
