The French General Who Saved the American Revolution, Then Narrowly Escaped the Guillotine
In short: Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, was the architect of the decisive victory at Yorktown. Yet, his life was a turbulent arc from royal military glory to the dark cells of the Reign of Terror, where he sat waiting for execution until the very last moment.
Born in 1725, Rochambeau was a seasoned veteran of European conflicts long before he crossed the Atlantic. By the time he was appointed to lead the Expédition Particulière in 1780, he had already distinguished himself in the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. Despite his experience, he was initially hesitant to accept command of the 7,000 French troops sent to support George Washington, fearing his force was too small to make a meaningful impact.
His arrival in Newport, Rhode Island, in July 1780 was followed by a year of strategic inactivity, as he refused to abandon the French fleet blockaded by the British. However, his patience paid off in 1781. After marching his troops to join Washington, he played a critical role in the Siege of Yorktown, forcing Lord Cornwallis to surrender in October. This victory cemented his legacy, earning him two captured British cannons from the American Congress and a lasting reputation as a vital ally to the young nation.
Rochambeau’s later years were marked by the volatility of the French Revolution. Although he was named a Marshal of France in 1791, his command of the Armée du Nord ended in resignation following setbacks against the Austrians. During the Reign of Terror, he was imprisoned in the Conciergerie and faced a scheduled execution. He was saved only by the Thermidorian Reaction, which ended the terror just days before his death was set to occur. He lived until 1807, eventually finding favor under Napoleon.
