In short: Jean III de Grailly, the Captal de Buch, was a legendary military leader during the Hundred Years' War. Celebrated as an ideal of chivalry, he served the English crown with unwavering devotion. His life was defined by brilliant battlefield maneuvers, shifting allegiances, and a final, tragic act of profound personal loyalty.

Born to a noble Gascon family, Jean III de Grailly rose to prominence as a key commander for the English. In 1348, he became one of the founding Knights of the Garter. His tactical brilliance was most evident at the 1356 Battle of Poitiers, where he led a decisive cavalry flanking maneuver that resulted in the capture of King John II of France. This victory solidified his reputation as a formidable warrior and a trusted lieutenant to Edward, the Black Prince.

His military career was marked by complex shifts in service. Though he briefly fought for Charles II of Navarre in 1364 and later accepted a title from Charles V of France, his loyalty ultimately returned to the English. He fought alongside the Black Prince at the 1367 Battle of Nájera, where he captured his long-time rival, Bertrand du Guesclin. By 1371, his service was rewarded with the position of Constable of Aquitaine.

The end of his life was defined by his steadfast refusal to betray his oath. After being captured by French forces in 1372, he spent his remaining years imprisoned at the Temple in Paris. King Charles V deemed him too dangerous to release, yet the Captal refused his freedom because it would have required him to take up arms against the king of England. Upon learning of the death of his mentor, the Black Prince, he lost the will to live, refused food, and died in 1376.
