From Colombian youth gold to the pinnacle of Italian football
In short: Jhon Lucumí didn't just join elite European clubs; he became a cornerstone for historic milestones. From winning titles in Belgium to helping Bologna reach the Champions League for the first time in 60 years, his trajectory is a masterclass in steady, high-level defensive progression.
Born in 1998, Lucumí began his journey in the youth academy of Deportivo Cali in 2007. His early development was marked by international success, notably winning a gold medal at the 2014 South American Games with the Colombia U-17 squad. He made his professional debut in 2015, but it was his move to the Belgian Pro League side Genk in 2018 that accelerated his rise to the European stage.
In Belgium, Lucumí quickly became a defensive pillar. During his first season (2018–19), he helped Genk secure the Belgian First Division A title and the Belgian Super Cup. His consistency allowed him to transition seamlessly to Serie A in 2022. At Bologna, he played a vital role in one of the club's most significant modern achievements: qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 1964–65 season.
Lucumí's impact continued into the 2024–25 season, where he scored Bologna's first goal in their Champions League league phase and helped the club win its first Coppa Italia since 1974. His international career has been equally storied, featuring in three editions of the Copa América and making his FIFA World Cup debut as a starter for Colombia on June 17, 2026, against Uzbekistan.
His career path illustrates a methodical climb through three of the world's most competitive leagues. By joining Juventus in 2026 on a four-year contract, he reached the summit of Italian football, having already proven his ability to deliver trophies and historic milestones across different borders.
