From child labourer to media mogul and political prisoner: the life of Jimmy Lai
In short: Jimmy Lai rose from a penniless child stowaway to a titan of Hong Kong media and retail. A fierce critic of the Chinese Communist Party, he built an empire on tabloid-style journalism and pro-democracy advocacy. Today, he remains imprisoned, viewing his confinement as the summit of his life.
Born in 1947 in Canton, Lai’s early life was defined by the collapse of his family’s wealth following the Communist takeover. After his father fled to Hong Kong and his mother was sent to labour reform, a young Lai survived by hawking goods and dodging police. At age 12, he stowed away to Hong Kong, where he worked as a child labourer in a garment factory. His business acumen eventually led him to purchase a bankrupt factory in 1975 and later found the retail giant Giordano in 1981, which expanded into 30 countries.
In 1995, Lai pivoted to media, investing US$100 million to launch Apple Daily. The newspaper became a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, blending tabloid sensationalism with aggressive political reporting. Lai’s outspoken criticism of Beijing—including calling the Chinese Communist Party a monopoly—made him a primary target for intimidation, ranging from petrol bombings at his home to commercial boycotts. Despite these pressures, he remained a vocal advocate, meeting with high-level U.S. officials like Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi to discuss Hong Kong’s future.
Following the 2020 enactment of the national security law, Lai’s life changed dramatically. Arrested in August 2020 for alleged collusion with foreign forces, he faced a series of legal battles that shuttered his media operations and led to his imprisonment. By 2021, he had been sentenced to a total of 20 months in prison for various charges, including unauthorized assembly and participating in a banned Tiananmen vigil. As of September 2025, Lai remains in solitary confinement at Stanley Prison, a state he reportedly requested himself, maintaining that his imprisonment represents the culmination of his life’s work.
