In short: Born into poverty in a coal-mining family, Lai Ching-te transitioned from a career in medicine to the highest office in Taiwan. His journey from a physician specializing in nephrology to the presidency reflects the island's own transformation from authoritarian rule to a vibrant, contested democracy.

Lai Ching-te was born in 1959 in the Wanli District of New Taipei City. His early life was marked by tragedy; his father, a coal miner, died of carbon monoxide poisoning when Lai was only two years old. Raised by his mother, Lai later credited this impoverished upbringing with instilling the determination that fueled his academic and political success. He pursued medicine, earning degrees from National Taiwan University and National Cheng Kung University, eventually becoming a chief physician in nephrology.

His entry into politics was catalyzed by the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1995–1996, when China launched missiles toward Taiwan during its first free presidential election. Viewing this as a defining moment, Lai abandoned his medical practice to run for the National Assembly in 1996. He subsequently served as a legislator for four consecutive terms, where he gained recognition for his work on social welfare and medical policy, and later as the mayor of Tainan, where he secured a record-breaking 73 percent of the vote in 2014.

Lai’s political career has been defined by his vocal support for Taiwan’s sovereignty. While he once described himself as a 'pragmatic worker for Taiwanese independence,' he has since clarified that he advocates for de facto independence, arguing that Taiwan does not need to declare what it already possesses. This stance has drawn sharp criticism from the Chinese government, which has labeled him a 'troublemaker.' Despite these regional tensions and domestic economic concerns that bolstered opposition parties, Lai was elected president in January 2024, assuming office in May of that year.
