The rare feat of a 30-30 season in the Pacific Coast League
In short: In 2014, Joc Pederson achieved something nearly unseen for eight decades. By hitting 30 home runs and stealing 30 bases in a single season, he joined an elite group of hitters, proving that his power and speed were a generational combination rarely captured in the minor leagues.
While many players possess either power or speed, achieving the '30-30' milestone is a feat of extreme athletic versatility. In 2014, while playing for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes, Joc Pederson became the first player in the Pacific Coast League to record 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in one season since Frank Demaree did so in 1934. He was only the fourth player in the league's history to accomplish this, joining legends like Lefty O'Doul in 1927 and Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri in 1925.
Pederson's performance that year was statistically dominant. Beyond the 30-30 club, he led the league in runs scored (106) and walks (100), while maintaining a .435 on-base percentage. His ability to punish mistakes was evident in his .582 slugging percentage and his tendency to drive the ball, particularly with runners on base, where he batted .366. This high-impact play earned him the Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the साथ Year awards.
This breakout season served as a springboard to Major League Baseball. After being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2010 draft, Pederson transitioned from a standout high school athlete in Palo Alto—where he even outpaced future NFL star Davante Adams in receptions—to a legitimate MLB threat. His journey through the Dodgers' system, including stints in Ogden and Chattanooga, culminated in a major league debut in September 2014, marking the arrival of a player capable of elite exit velocities and consistent power.
