From coal mines to the European Cup: Jock Stein's long road
In short: Jock Stein didn't just manage football; he escaped it. A miner by trade who saw the pitch as a sanctuary, he rose from the pits of Lanarkshire to become the first manager from a Northern European country to lift the European Cup.
Born in 1922 into a mining family, Stein viewed football as an escape from the grueling life of the coal mines. He worked underground while playing for junior clubs like Blantyre Victoria and Albion Rovers during World War II. This dual life allowed him to remain active on the pitch while many teammates were serving in the Armed Forces. His journey toward professionalism was arduous; he initially moved to a Welsh club, Llanelli, where he became a full-time professional earning £12 per week, only to return to Scotland after financial instability and personal disillusionment at the club.
Stein's transition from player to manager was marked by significant hurdles. After retiring due to a septic ankle injury in 1957, he coached Celtic's reserve team, nurturing future stars like Billy McNeill. His managerial ascent was not without controversy; some reports suggest his appointment as Celtic manager in 1965 was delayed due to his Protestant faith, as the club had historically favored Catholic managers. He eventually secured full control of the team after rejecting offers for joint management or roles at other clubs like Wolves.
Stein's legacy is defined by a relentless pursuit of success across multiple clubs. At Dunfermline, he turned a struggling side into a cup winner in 1961. At Hibernian, despite his later admission that leaving the club while they were near the top was 'embarrassing,' he achieved a 62% win rate and won their first trophy in a decade. Ultimately, at Celtic, he secured nine successive league titles between 1966 and 1974 and led them to the pinnacle of European football in 1967.
