The Scottish songwriter who co-wrote a Top Ten classic hit
In short: Before he became a staple of the folk-rock scene, Joe Egan was a session musician honing his craft in small British bands. His partnership with Gerry Rafferty eventually produced one of the most recognizable songs in pop history, defining a specific era of 1970s songwriting.
Born in 1946 in Paisley, Scotland, Joe Egan grew up in an Irish Catholic family. His musical foundation was built through local education and early collaborations with his schoolmate, Gerry Rafferty. Before finding mainstream success, the two navigated the British music scene as session musicians and members of smaller groups like The Sensors and The Maverix.
In 1972, the duo formed Stealers Wheel, a band that blended folk and rock influences. Their breakthrough came with their self-titled debut album, which was produced by the legendary American songwriting team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The album yielded the 1973 hit "Stuck in the Middle With You," a track co-written by Egan and Rafferty that reached the Top Ten in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
Despite this commercial peak, the band faced internal friction and declining sales, leading to their dissolution in 1975. While Rafferty achieved solo fame with "Baker Street" in 1978, Egan released his own debut, Out of Nowhere, in 1979. His solo work included the radio hit "Back on the Road" and the 1981 album Map. Egan eventually stepped away from the music industry in the 1990s, leaving behind a legacy of sophisticated folk-rock craftsmanship.
Egan passed away in his hometown of Paisley in July 2024 at the age of 77. His career serves as a testament to the power of collaborative songwriting and the transition from the rigorous world of session work to the heights of international pop success.
