In short: Formed in Paisley in 1972, Stealers Wheel became a global sensation with their hit Stuck in the Middle with You. Despite their commercial success, the band was plagued by constant lineup changes and internal friction, eventually dissolving into a duo before fading away, only to be immortalized by Quentin Tarantino.

Stealers Wheel was established in 1972 by childhood friends Joe Egan and Gerry Rafferty. The group underwent rapid personnel shifts almost immediately; by the time they signed with A&M Records, original members Roger Brown, Rab Noakes, and Iain Campbell had been replaced by Paul Pilnick, Tony Williams, and Rod Coombes. This second iteration recorded their self-titled debut album under the guidance of producers Leiber & Stoller. The record was a success, yielding the hit single Stuck in the Middle with You, which reached No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart in 1973.

The band's trajectory was defined by instability. Rafferty departed before the first album's release, only to return after the single's massive success, which sold over one million copies worldwide. However, the subsequent departure of several key musicians left the band as a duo supported by session players. Their second album, Ferguslie Park, named after a district in Paisley, failed to replicate the commercial impact of their debut. Tensions between Egan and Rafferty, coupled with business difficulties involving their management, led to a long hiatus before their final album, Right or Wrong, was released in 1975.

The band's legacy was unexpectedly revitalized in 1992 when Quentin Tarantino featured Stuck in the Middle with You in his debut film, Reservoir Dogs. The song became synonymous with the film's infamous torture sequence, cementing its place in pop culture. While the band briefly re-formed in 2008 for a project in Blackpool, they never returned to their former prominence. The core members have since passed away: Rafferty in 2011, Noakes in 2022, and Egan in 2024. Despite their short lifespan, their work has seen various reissues, including remastered sets in 2017, ensuring their brief but impactful contribution to folk rock remains accessible.
