From architect to icon: the man who built Philippine noontime TV
In short: Before he became a pillar of Philippine comedy, Joey de Leon was a trained architect. Today, he is recognized as the creator of Eat Bulaga!, the country's longest-running variety show. His journey from radio disc jockey to cultural powerhouse is a masterclass in media evolution.
Joey de Leon's path to stardom was paved by versatility. After earning an architecture degree from the National University in Manila, he spent the 1960s as a disc jockey for 12 different radio stations, including all seven stations owned by ABS-CBN Corporation. His transition to television began with a gag show on IBC 13, but his true breakthrough came in 1975. He invited the Sotto brothers, Tito and Vic, to join him on GMA Network's Discorama. What was intended as a one-off appearance became a permanent fixture after high ratings forced the network to grant the show a new lease on life. The trio eventually moved to the noontime slot, launching Eat Bulaga! in 1979. The show quickly toppled its established rival, Student Canteen, to become a national phenomenon. The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) acknowledges de Leon as the show's creator, a role exceeding his hosting duties, while he also helped establish TVJ Productions. Throughout his career, he has balanced solo projects—including sitcoms like Joey and Son and films like She-Man: Mistress of the Universe—with his role as a prolific songwriter for acts like VST & Co. and various novelty hits. However, his legacy is also marked by complex controversies. In 1982, he was among three personalities accused of gang rape by a 15-year-old actress, a case that involved allegations of coerced legal settlements. More recently, de Leon has faced public backlash for insensitive remarks regarding mental health and suicide, leading to formal apologies from both himself and the networks he appeared on. Despite these hurdles, he remains a central figure in Philippine media, continuing to host, write columns, and influence the country's entertainment landscape.
