In short: John John Florence didn't just learn to surf; he was born into the water. Introduced to the ocean by his mother, he first stood on a board at six months old. By age five, he was surfing independently, beginning a career defined by extreme dominance.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Florence grew up in an ocean-side house at Banzai Pipeline. This proximity to some of the world's most dangerous waves shaped his early development. His mother, Alexandra, a surfer herself, facilitated his entry into the sport at an unprecedented age. At age 13, he entered the Hawaii-based Vans Triple Crown of Surfing—a three-part big-wave competition—becoming the youngest participant despite his 85-pound weight and 4'11" height.

Florence's trajectory was marked by both rapid ascent and physical toll. He won back-to-back World Surf League titles in 2016 and 2017, becoming the first Hawaii-born surfer to do so since Andy Irons. However, his career has been punctuated by severe injuries, including a broken back in 2011, a broken wrist, a broken leg, a broken arm, and an ankle ligament tear. Despite these setbacks, he has maintained a high ranking, notably securing a third world title in 2024 at Lower Trestles.

Beyond the competition, Florence is a significant figure in surf culture and media. He has won the Volcom Pipe Pro four times, earning a reputation as its all-time ruler. He pioneered surf cinematography by featuring in 'View from a Blue Moon', which was the initial 4k surf movie filmed using only helicopter-based aerial shots. While keeping a 2026 wildcard spot, he declared in early 2025 his intention to withdraw from the 2025 WSL Championship Tour to pursue a new style of surfing.
