The dual-sport athlete who traded Major League Baseball for NFL stardom
In short: In 1992, John Lynch was a rising star pitcher for the Florida Marlins. But a chance encounter with a legendary coach changed his trajectory forever. He walked away from professional baseball to pursue football, eventually earning a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Lynch's transition from baseball to football was not a simple choice. While playing for Stanford University, he initially focused on baseball as a pitcher. In 1992, he was selected as a right-handed pitcher in the second round (66th overall) of the MLB draft by the Florida Marlins. However, after being approached by Stanford head coach Bill Walsh, who was impressed by his athleticism, Lynch decided to return to football. Before his defensive shift, he actually began his collegiate football career as a quarterback. He only transitioned to free safety after a brief period of playing baseball and football simultaneously.
This decision was met with significant skepticism from NFL scouts. Analysts worried about his limited experience at the safety position and suspected his football interest might be a tactic to increase his baseball salary. The uncertainty was so high that the Green Bay Packers even passed on him in the first round, choosing safety George Teague instead, after Lynch assured them he would commit to football.
Ultimately, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took the chance in the third round of the 1993 NFL draft. Lynch's career flourished, characterized by his defensive prowess and high tackle counts. He became a cornerstone of the 'Tampa 2' defense under head coach Tony Dungy and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. His journey from a collegiate quarterback and baseball pitcher to a nine-time Pro Bowler and 2021 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee remains a remarkable testament to his versatility and dedication. His professional success included nine Pro Bowl selections throughout his tenure in the league. His induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame occurred in 2021.
