The Lithuanian force who redefined the Toronto Raptors' interior presence
In short: From a fifth overall pick in 2011 to a dominant force in the NBA, Jonas Valančiūnas has become a cornerstone of Lithuanian basketball. His career is marked by relentless rebounding and a rare ability to dominate the paint, leaving an indelible mark on franchises from Toronto to Memphis.
Born on 6 May 1992, Valančiūnas rose through the Lithuanian basketball system, starting professionally with Perlas in 2008. His talent was evident early; by 2011, he was selected fifth overall in the NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors. His impact was immediate. Facing the Indiana Pacers on 31 October 2012, he logged 12 points and 10 rebounds during his NBA debut—the first Raptors rookie to achieve a double-double in his opening game since Damon Stoudamire in 1995.
Throughout his tenure in Toronto, Valančiūnas became a vital asset. He was named Lithuanian Basketball Player of the Year multiple times, including in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. His physical presence was most evident in his rebounding prowess. In the 2018 NBA playoffs, he recorded a 21-point, 21-rebound performance against the Cleveland Cavaliers, which remains the best double-double in Raptors playoff history.
His journey continued through several high-profile moves. After a significant four-year, $64 million extension with the Raptors in 2015, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in February 2019 in exchange for Marc Gasol. In Memphis, he continued to break records, including setting a franchise record for defensive rebounds in a game with 23. On 13 August 2020, he achieved his first career triple-double, recording 26 points, 19 rebounds, and 12 assists in a victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.
